Vet Visits & Dry Food Wet Food Dry Food

Around the beginning of August we realized that the possibility of Kenji's job being transferred back to Hawaii might be drawing near. As such, I began researching the regulations for avoiding Hawaii's pet quarantine. The two main things we had to do was 1) have microchips implanted in Spammy and Musubi, and 2) get a rabies blood test done.

At the kitties' first vet visit to get their microchips, the vet said Spammy was getting too fat from eating dry food. This was the second time that the vet told us we should switch the kitties to wet food, so the next day we went and did it. Some changes in the kitties have followed:

Before Dry Food -- Spammy would noisily beg and beg and beg for food. As soon as the food hit the bowl, he would gobble gobble gobble, and push Musubi out of the way if he wanted to eat from the bowl she was eating from. Musubi would eat, but in a dainty, little girl sort of way, and she would not overeat. Musubi would always ask us for water. She liked to drink water out of a running faucet. Musubi would often try to anticipate when one of us might be going to the bathroom and race in there ahead of us, hoping we'd run some water for her. Spammy loved to lick scraps of lots of different fruits like oranges, pears, nectarines, plums, etc. Also, the kitties would puke maybe 2 or 3 times a week (between the two of them), and oftentimes Musubi would clean it up.

After Dry Food -- Spammy still begs for food, but he's much more patient about it. When I put the food bowls down for the kitties, Musubi is the first one to the bowl, going gobble gobble gobble. Now that Spammy is used to the wet food, he chows down a little bit too, but he usually has had enough well before Musubi is satiated. Musubi no longer begs for water. Spammy no longer cares for his favorite fruits. Oh, and Spammy has lost a couple pounds and the vet says he's a good weight now. Musubi gained a little weight, but she is still not overweight. At first the kitties puked even more than they did on dry food, but now they haven't puked at all for the last week or so.

So anyway last Wednesday we had a second vet visit to get the blood samples drawn for the rabies test. I also had the kitties get updated rabies shots, just so they could have the shots done post-microchip. When I brought the kitties in the second time, Kenji and I seemed to think that it was more likely that we would not get transferred before January, at which time Kenji would temporarily take his name off the list for going to Honolulu. But as it turned out, later that afternoon Kenji got the call that he's being transferred. So now we are all busy getting the house all fixed up looking nice for potential buyers...

But in addition to looking nice we want the house to SMELL nice... and, well, wet cat food does not smell nice. At all. So we're thinking maybe we should switch the kitties back to dry food temporarily while we are showing the house. I know Musubi won't be happy about that. I wonder how Spammy will feel about it.

Where Rubber Bands Come From

It seems like every day I am picking up rubber bands and putting them in our miscellaneous junk drawer. I don't know where they keep coming from, because I've been making a concentrated effort NOT to leave rubber bands lying around for the kitties to play with.

So why do I keep finding rubber bands on the stairs, or next to the kitties' food bowls in the cellar, or in the hallway upstairs, or in the dining room next to the scratching post, or wherevers?

I suppose it could maybe be that Kenji is forgetting to put rubber bands in their place. But he's pretty good about putting stuff away, so I'm beginning to think it might be that rubber bands are actually produced by cats. I don't know if they poop rubber bands or what; I just know we never had rubber bands randomly and repeatedly appearing all over the house until we got Spam and Musubi.

I bet the rubber band factory is just a big room filled with cats making rubber bands all day. And when the cats go home at night, a giant Roomba goes around the factory floor collecting the day's rubber band production. I bet that's what you're going to see when Discovery Channel has the How It's Made episode about rubber bands.

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!

Happy 2008! Once again we welcomed in the new year at our friend Kevin's apartment. We ate all kinds of yummy food, talked, played Dutch Blitz, and watched ancient Dick Clark on the TV. Even through all the makeup, that guy is finally showing his age. It must be about ten years since the last time I watched him on New Years Eve because I don't remember him seeming so old - I guess he's doing pretty well though for all the strokes he's had.

When we got home we found a bunch of Au Bon Pain napkins and and red ribbon on our kitchen floor. It didn't occur to me till after I cleaned it up that the mess was the kitties having their own little New Years celebration, throwing confetti and streamers around the kitchen when the clock struck twelve. Good kitties!

Peanut Cat and Friends

We have only been gone for a couple of days and we have already met five new kitty cats. The one right here looks a lot like Spammy, but sheʻs not. Her name is Peanut, and you can tell sheʻs not Spammy because she has a little white dot on her neck. Peanut belongs to my friend Patti. Sheʻs a friendly little kitty, and she looks real pretty sitting in front of the Christmas tree.

You might think this is a picture of an orange bowling ball and a black and white cat. Turns out that bowling ball has little legs and it can run. The bowling ball has a name, too - Morris. The black and white kitty is named Cindy. Cindy and Morris are living in Mommy and Daddyʻs basement right now. They like to chase strings around when they are not busy eating and sleeping.

The other two kitties we met are named Trouble and P. Or is it Pee? I didnʻt see how it was spelled. :) They live at our friend Chris's house, and we went to visit him on Friday. I forgot to take pictures of them though.

Me 'n' Musubi :)

I almost never get to be in the picture since I'm always the one taking them. Kenji had to make a funny sound to get Musubi to open her eyes wide, hehe.

Spammy sticks his head in a glass

This morning I was drinking some orange juice - the first time we've had some in a month or two. Spammy was so happy to lick my empty OJ glass. He shoved his whole head in the glass, and almost couldn't get it out!

Toy Rescue!

Today I was working from home, using our dining room table as my desk. Spammy always hangs around me wherever I go in the house, and today was no different. Near where I was sitting is the radiator, and the kitties' scratching post. I guess Spammy was bored because out of the blue he decided to stand on top of the scratching post.

Spammy used to hop up on his scratching post all the time when he was a little tiny kitty. He hasn't done that for almost two years now, so I was surprised when he did it today.

Of course I took the opportunity to make up a new game for him. It's called Rescue the Toys from the Radiator!

I put all of Spammy's favorite toys on top of the radiator (don't worry, the radiator was not on!). Starting at from the top of the picture below, there was Cowie, Mousie, Carrot, Peary and Moley. Spammy rescued his toys at least four or five times before he got bored again. Sometimes in between rescues, he climbed up on top of the scratching post just in case there were more toys up there. Cute!

Happy Halloween!

Yep, we ran out of candy again. This time we must have had like 150 kids come to the door... at least that's about how many pieces of candy we thought we had.

This year we had big purple wizard guy answering the door. Most of the kids thought he was funny, but some thought he was scary. A Grim Reaper chick also answered the door, but she was too scary so we didn't let her open the door too often.

After running out of candy, big purple wizard guy was spotted playing karaoke!

We also found a little Musubi kitty hanging out with a green glowy pumpkin. :)

Closeup Kitties :)

The kitties say "Happy Birthday!" to a certain someone who happens to have a birthday today, and who was up half the night last night singing karaoke in his living room. =)

Some Assembly Required

Yep, so anyway the Sleep Number people were having a factory outlet sale, and that's why we decided to get our new bed at this time. We probably saved about $400 over what we would have paid for the same model if we purchased it through the store.

We could have paid a guy $150 or something like that to deliver and put the bed together for us, but we said nah to that. So today, after I finished delivering books to old folks, I went to work assembling the bed. First to you have to put the foundation together:

Those are the support beams - they are all just made out of very heavy duty plastic. Once the support beams are together, you attach the legs and put the panels on top:
Next you lay the mattress flat and remove the top. You place long foam blocks all around the outer edge, and then lay the air chambers inside, and attach the air chambers to the air pump:

That zig zaggy piece of foam laying on top of the air chambers is the piece you stuff between the two air chambers once they are inflated. While I was waiting for the air chambers to inflate, look who I found, making herself comfy in the folded up mattress top:

One chamber filled...

2 chambers filled...

After the chambers are full, you put a big piece of foam on top, and then zip on the mattress top and make the bed!

Yay! Now we just need to get a nice bed-skirt. And boy will Kenji be surprised when he gets home and sees a new bed after being away for a week.

No More Scary Laptop Bag

I posted this just for Kenji, since he's out of town. Musubi has been scared of this bag for some reason. She always approaches it very gingerly and then runs away. Well I guess she's not scared of it anymore.

Wake Up!

This morning Kenji and I slept in because it's a holiday. The kitties don't appreciate that because then they have to wait to be fed. Well, Musubi doesn' t really seem to care, but Spammy will begin gently trying to wake me up starting around 7:00 a.m. He'll come in to visit us, sniff my face, walk around in circles and purr, then lie down on my arm and purr, then stand up, circle around and lie down again and purr, and then also dig at the sheets a bit.

Somewhere around 8:30, Spammy got a little more forceful in his wake-up routine. He had just finished circling around and lied down, purring, when I started to pet him, He bit my arm. It was not a vicious bite... he only bit just hard enough to get a grip on my arm. Then I could feel Spammy try to pick up my arm to take me with him, I assume, downstairs to his food bowl. Now that's just extra cute!
