Toy Rescue!

Today I was working from home, using our dining room table as my desk. Spammy always hangs around me wherever I go in the house, and today was no different. Near where I was sitting is the radiator, and the kitties' scratching post. I guess Spammy was bored because out of the blue he decided to stand on top of the scratching post.

Spammy used to hop up on his scratching post all the time when he was a little tiny kitty. He hasn't done that for almost two years now, so I was surprised when he did it today.

Of course I took the opportunity to make up a new game for him. It's called Rescue the Toys from the Radiator!

I put all of Spammy's favorite toys on top of the radiator (don't worry, the radiator was not on!). Starting at from the top of the picture below, there was Cowie, Mousie, Carrot, Peary and Moley. Spammy rescued his toys at least four or five times before he got bored again. Sometimes in between rescues, he climbed up on top of the scratching post just in case there were more toys up there. Cute!

Closeup Kitties :)

The kitties say "Happy Birthday!" to a certain someone who happens to have a birthday today, and who was up half the night last night singing karaoke in his living room. =)

Wake Up!

This morning Kenji and I slept in because it's a holiday. The kitties don't appreciate that because then they have to wait to be fed. Well, Musubi doesn' t really seem to care, but Spammy will begin gently trying to wake me up starting around 7:00 a.m. He'll come in to visit us, sniff my face, walk around in circles and purr, then lie down on my arm and purr, then stand up, circle around and lie down again and purr, and then also dig at the sheets a bit.

Somewhere around 8:30, Spammy got a little more forceful in his wake-up routine. He had just finished circling around and lied down, purring, when I started to pet him, He bit my arm. It was not a vicious bite... he only bit just hard enough to get a grip on my arm. Then I could feel Spammy try to pick up my arm to take me with him, I assume, downstairs to his food bowl. Now that's just extra cute!

OJ Kitty

I probably mentioned before that Spammy likes orange juice. Whenever I have a glass of orange juice, he's always right there hoping and waiting to get his share. And almost always I let him lick the glass when I'm finished. Usually, I can see he tries really hard to be patient, sitting and watching and waiting for me to finish. Probably more accurately, he sits and watches for a moment of distraction, leading to the opportunity to sneak a sip if he can get it.

Tonight he was sitting on my knee, doing just that. As soon as I pulled out the camera, he was all over my glass. When I finished, I set down my glass and waited for him to stick his head inside. And he did. I should have used one of the tall glasses; then he would have had to stuff his whole head instead to get all the juice.

Tonight Kenji, Tiffany and I watched Sin City. It was pretty oogie.

Kitties that Think They Know How to Make a Bed

Whenever I do housework, Spammy likes to help. If I fold laundry, that usually means that Spammy will lie down on top of the t-shirts and turtlenecks that I am about to fold. When I change the sheets on the bed, he thinks his role is to lie down on the sheetless mattress. So I put the sheet right on top of him and tuck it in... which makes for a rather lumpy bed.

This time, Musubi saw Spammy helping, so she decided to help too, in her own special way:

Favorite Kitty Toys

Yesterday I vacuumed the house. When I moved the living room furniture aside to vacuum the floors beneath, I found the usual treasure trove of kitty cat toys that went missing since the last time I vacuumed under the living room furniture. Only one of the toys was actually purchased intentionally as a cat toy; the rest were stolen orange juice and milk jug caps, rubber bands, little paper cranes, and an assortment of tiny stuffed animals that came from my former workplace in Hawaii. One of those little animals is a moose, and he happens to be Musubi's favorite toy. She named him Moosoobi.

Spammy and Musubi definitely have their own favorite toys - toys that one kitty will play with like crazy, yet the other kitty is disinterested. Moosoobi is one such toy. Spammy couldn't care less about Moosoobi, but Musubi will bat Moosoobi all around, and then pick him up and take care of him like he's a little kitten.

As I type this post, Spammy has just dragged one of his favorite toys, Stick, all the way up the stairs and dropped it on the floor by my chair. I wrote about Stick in a previous post, back when Spammy would play fetch. It's funny that he drags Stick all over the house to us because he barely plays with it anymore when I pick it up and wiggle it for him. Yet he'll drag it up and down the stairs at least four times a day. Spammy also loves to play with Cowie, which used to be a cute little Gateway cow obtained at some trade show, but now is a dirty gray disgusting, half-torn to pieces cow. Like Stick, Spammy will pick Cowie up and carry him around. He also chucks him in the air and wrestles with Cowie from behind table legs and atop of scratching posts. Spammy also enjoys Fiber Optic Toy - another trade show giveaway. Fiber Optic Toy is a useless but fun bit of technology with a handle containing batteries and multiple colored LEDs
that illuminate the fiber optic strands that extend about four or five inches from the handle. When I wiggle Fiber Optic Toy, Spammy likes to chase it and grab it in his teeth and try to yank it out of my hand, which I usually let him do. Then he'll carry it to some place near or under the dining room table and wait for me to pick it up again so he can grab it from me.

Happy Half-Birthday Spammy!

Somewhere around the end of January is Spammy's half-birthday. We don't know Spammy's exact birthday, because unlike Musubi, he was not born at the shelter. Instead, he and his little litter-mates were dropped off at the shelter just days after they were born, which was at the very end of July 2005. So that makes Spammy one and a half years old.

It was also my birthday recently. I'm a bit older than one and a half. I'm more like 25 and 144 months old. You do the math.

Anyway, this evening, shortly after I got home from work, the UPS guy came to our door and he had a mystery box for us! The kitties and I opened it up, and this is what we found! We're not entirely sure who sent us this nice comfy kitty cat carrier, because the packing slip didn't say anything about who sent for it. But we have a sneaking suspicion who did. >:) The kitties and I say thank you very much! (Well, Spammy and Musubi say "prrrr prrr prrr bllllp! meow!", which means "thank you very much!")

Musubi gave the kitty carrier a try too, and she also approves.
Musubi especially needs a sturdy kitty cat carrier because the last time she went to the vet to have her shots updated, she clean busted out of the cardboard carrier that we brought her home in from the shelter. It wasn't that the box was too small for her; rather, it was that she was too determined not to be in a box. At a traffic light, I had to stuff Musubi back into her box, and then drive with one hand holding the box shut, while the other hand took alternated between steering and shifting! Hopefully Musubi won't figure out how to use zippers...

Pumpkin Time!

Last weekend Kenji and I bought pumpkins to carve into Jack-O-Lanterns. Today, while we were sitting in Panera Bread having coffe and hot chocolate, I figured out what I was going to carve. So when we got home, I made a nice stencil for myself on the computer that I used to draw my design onto my pumpkin.

Have I mentioned that one of Spammy's new favorite foods is spaghetti squash? Well, while I was gutting my pumpkin this evening, I realized he must have a thing for all gourds. As soon as I started digging out the seeds and stringy sloppy pumpkin guts, Spammy went crazy begging me some. He was munching on the strands, and then he even tried to get inside my hollowed-out pumpkin to lick the insides. It was very silly.

Musubi just looked on, like the polite little kitty she is:

And here's my finished product!

Hunting Birdies

The other day it was warm enough for me to open the window. Spammy and Musubi noticed a birdie walking around up on the very edge of our roof. So they both squatted in the window, wishing they could go catch the birdie. :)

Kitties, One Year Later

It's been just a little over a year since we got Spammy and Musubi. Today was the first day I've caught them snuggled up together in a long time. Maybe because it's getting cold outside again.

See how big they are now compared to last October?

Spam learns to play fetch and goes YouTubing!

I think I may have mentioned before that Spammy's favorite toy is Stick. Stick is a long piece of white plastic that used to be the seal around a bucket of kitty litter we bought way back when we first got the kitties last year. Well he loves to play with it so much, he often wakes us up in the morning, not to get us to feed him, but rather to dangle his stick around so he can chase it!

Yesterday I was busy for much of the day doing useless stuff on the computer, like discovering Google Calendar and Spreadsheets, and checking out Kevin Kelly's really cool blog about cool tools. While I was in the midst of all this, Spammy came into the room and sat down next to me and began to meow very loudly. When I looked to see what he wanted, I saw that he had carried his stick all the way into the office from the bedroom!

So of course I played stick with him. I wiggled it around, made him chase it in circles, and then I threw it out of the room and into the hallway. He ran out of the room, picked it up, and carried it right back for me to continue playing with him. How cute is that??

As I was just about to go to sleep last night, Spammy carried his stick up onto the bed. So I threw it into the hallway for him, and he carried it back. We did that for six or seven times. Then I think he got smart and decided he didn't want to carry the stick anymore and so he put it down somewhere out reach for me.

This morning I tried to capture him playing fetch on video, and was able to get him to do a half-hearted fetch at least once. Anyway, I played around with the video for a couple hours, added a shameless promo for Mochi Kids!™ to the end of it, and uploaded it as my first video to YouTube.com. Go Spammy!

House kitties get to go outside!

Last weekend we bought a harness and a little leash for taking the kitties outside for supervised exploring. As you can see from the pictures, Spammy is all about poking around and looking at stuff, while Musubi is a bit more skiddish about it.
After her first time outside (photo below), Musubi did watch Spammy walking around outside on several occasions, from her save perch in the window. I think this encouraged her a little bit, because the next time I brought her out, she was more willing to look around at stuff.
And imagine me going all my life and never laying eyes on a cicada until last week - and there here we are again - Spammy spotted one in the grass! Well, it was pretty easy to spot this one because at the moment we found it, it was having a fight with a bumble bee. The bumble bee left and Spammy tried taking a closer look... but when the cicada buzzed it wings, it scared Spammy and he hurried away. :)
Mr. Cicada was really mixed up in the grass, so it's hard to tell what he is. But I can assure you he's not the grey thing on the right. :P
